New-Build vs Retrofit Self-Righting Projects

A self-righting system review starts from the vessel project stage. New-build and retrofit projects can both be evaluated, but they usually require different information before an installation concept can be discussed.

For a new-build project

Share the available general arrangement drawing, hull dimensions, preliminary weight estimate, intended operating role and the planned stern layout. Identify equipment that may affect access, weight distribution or installation space before the layout is finalised.

For a retrofit project

Start with current-condition information: overall vessel photos, stern and transom photos, fully loaded weight, major equipment positions and clear dimensions of the possible installation area. Previous modifications and any equipment removed from the stern should also be recorded.

Use the same loaded condition

For either project type, the review should refer to the normal loaded operating condition rather than an empty hull. Describe the propulsion system, fuel or battery arrangement, crew, permanent equipment and typical payload so the configuration questions are based on the vessel as it is expected to operate.

Keep the review within project scope

An initial configuration review helps define the information and interfaces that need further engineering. It does not replace the vessel's required design review, stability work, installation drawings, operating procedures or local compliance obligations.
