Documenting a Marine Self-Righting System Functional Test

A functional test record helps a vessel owner and installer confirm what was checked on a specific marine self-righting system. It should describe the actual vessel configuration, test scope and observations. A generic test note cannot replace the vessel’s own design review, stability assessment, operating procedures or local compliance requirements.

Confirm the vessel configuration first

Record the vessel identification, normal loaded condition, installation location, cylinder status, recovery-bag arrangement, valve type and controller version. Include photographs of the stern installation area and the connected components. This makes it easier to compare later maintenance work with the configuration that was reviewed.

Define the test boundary

State which functions are being checked. Depending on the supplied configuration, this may include visual inspection, manual release controls, automatic-control inputs, electrical power connections, valve operation, hose routing and the recovery-bag deployment sequence. A record should identify whether a step was observed, not assume that every feature is present on every vessel.

Use controlled conditions

Plan the test location, personnel roles, communications and recovery arrangements before the test begins. Consider weather, water conditions, nearby traffic and the vessel’s own operating limits. Stop the test if the agreed conditions are no longer met, then document the reason and the next review action.

Keep the result traceable

Note the date, persons responsible, configuration details, observations, corrective actions and any parts that require further review. Store the record with the vessel’s installation documents. Where local rules, class requirements or customer procedures apply, coordinate the final test plan with the responsible engineering and compliance parties.
